Sunnyside is the residential part of Queens closest to Manhattan; its access to public transportation can't be better -- within 6 stops you're in mid-town Grand Central station on 42ns Street and 3 stops in Lexington Ave. & 59th Street and within 1.5 blocks #7 subway and Q60, Q32 bus stations. It used to be a town for Jewish and Irishes -- still many Irsh pubs and restaurants -- but has become much more ethnically diversified with the influx of newer immigrants such as Koreans, Hispanics, and others. Right off the NYC's major boulevard (Queens Blvd.), here you have access to both vibrant city life (mushrooming restauratns, bars, Irish pubs, cafes, etc.) and recess to coutry-like calm and relaxed environment.
Nate Silver called this super safe, clean, quiet, airy, lively, and cosmopolitan neighborhood right off mid-Manhattan a "hidden jewel" of the city. Sunnyside was ranked third in his "Most Livable Neighborhoods in New York: a quantitative index of the 50 most satisfying places to live." No doubt, Sunnyside is becoming increasingly popular among younger New Yorkers.
Among many tourist's attractions in Queens, my place is near to Sunnyside Historic Garden, Thalia Spanish Theater, Socrates Sculpture Park, and The Noguchi Museum. The latest news in the neighborhood is the opening of the fusion restaurant "Salt and Fat," within a stone's throw.
퀸즈에서는Midtown 맨하탄에서 가장 가까운 거리상에 위치한 Sunnyside는 한때는 Irish와 Jewish의 본거지였지만 지금은 한국인을 비롯하여 여러민족이 모여사는 cosmopolitan지역으로 탈바꿈했으며 저희 아파트는 문화재보호지역인 Sunnyside Historic Garden에서는 지척지간이고 그외 도보근거리에 Thalia Theater, Socrates Sculpture Park, and The Noguchi Museum 이 있습니다. 한창 뜨고 있는 퓨전레스토랑 "Salt and Fat"는 바로 코앞 위치 (한인 2세 Daniel Yi경영). 맨하탄으로 교통망이 이보다 더 좋을 수 없으며 미드 맨하탄의 Grand Central Station, United Nation, Time Square 까지15분내 (6-8 stops)에 59가 Lexington 에비뉴까진 3 stops내에 도착할 수 있습니다. 조용하고 깨끗한 안전지대라서 근래들어 젊은 층의 선호지역으로 손꼽히고 지금도 Irish pub를 보기위해 tourists들이 들리는 동네입니다.
2008년 대선을 정확하게 예견했던 통계학자 네이트 실버 (Nate Silver) 에 의하면 "뉴욕에서 가장 살기좋은 최고의동네" 연구결과 3위에 서니사이드 (Sunnyside)가 차지했으며 (1위는 부르클린의 Park Slope, 2위는 맨하탄의 Lower East Side) 서니사이드는 "안전하고, 조용하며, 7번 전철로 타임스퀘어까지 16분밖에 걸리지않는 'hidden jewel 숨은 보석'"이라고 칭송했습니다 (미주중앙일보 2010년 4월 13일자 참조3일자 참조).
뉴욕시의 가장 큰 대로인 Queens Blvd.에서 한블럭 반 떨어져 있어 city life를 즐길 수 있으면서도 문화재보호구역인 Sunnyside Historic Garden과도 지척지간이어서 조용하고 은밀한 country life를 동시에 맛볼 수 있는 곳이 서니사이드입니다. 안전, 조용, 청결, 그리고 맨하탄 접근의 용이성때문에 최근 서니사이드는 젊은 층에 인기상승으로 한창 뜨는 지역이 되가고 있습니다
